Field Trip to the Zoo!

Today was a perfect day for a field trip to the zoo!
Before we arrived, David said he wanted to see flamingos and elephants.
Elizabeth said she wanted to see elephants and giraffes.
I wanted to see the big cats.

I was disappointed that I didn't see lions or tigers,
but we did see a cheetah
and a jaguar.

Rebekah just enjoyed it all, I think!

But she especially loved the turtles and the penguins.

That's a big fella...

Is that my child???
Surely not...

Rebekah sat down on the komodo dragon and instantly
stood up saying, "Hot!"

(otters)

It was a great day!

Pseudo-Lapbooking

One of my homeschool friends recently asked about lapbooking and I realized that I was behind on blogging
some of the stuff we've been doing in school.  We don't go full out on lapbooking, with fancy folding & all, but do a simpler folder.  For astronomy I've been cutting the folders down and hole punching them so that they can fit in David's astronomy notebook.
.
I like having all of the information neatly presented without a lot of little papers floating around.  And David likes seeing his work combined into one place at the end of each chapter.

Handwriting practice, which is greatly needed, is a lot more fun when combined with a project than it is when we're working in the handwriting workbook! (which is more like torture)

I use the review questions at the end of the chapters for the questions that he answers.

This will also be a keepsake, because we used his actual footprint to make the flap book above.

When something in the chapter has been especially interesting to him, we make sure that gets into the folder.  It doesn't show up to well on the red, but he drew a volcano (above) to represent Olympus Mons on Mars - the largest volcano in the solar system!

David gets tickled every time he sees that picture of the asteroid that looks like a dog bone!!

We also do folders (instead of pockets) for his ancient history.  In hindsight, I wish I had cut them down & hole punched them also.

So that's a quick summary of our modified lapbooking that we've been doing this year!  See more.

Kids' First Geocaching Experience

I mentioned that my kids needed to have a GrandpaVenture and next thing I know we were loaded up & ready for an exciting day of geocaching!

Grandpa was in front with the GPS(s) and had all the cache coordinates entered in.  We headed south to find our first (virtual) cache.

I had gone through and selected some caches that I thought would be interesting to our crew.  Too bad we weren't in West earlier... I really wanted to get a kolache.  But it was close to lunch time, so we went on to Waco for pizza.

After lunch we headed on to an ammo box cache.

Had to stop and look at toadstools.  None were left standing.

David was excited with his first find!
So was Elizabeth!

 Our final destination was Temple.

At the opposite end from the depot was a new playground!

We had a little Cabana on the way home & got home in time for bed!  What a great day!

March ONE

I guess until Sarah is able to sit up, I'll have the others lay beside her!  Things I noticed about this picture: 1) David looks more boy every day, and less little boy.  2) None of the pictures I took of Elizabeth were bad.  3) Rebekah's hair is long enough for a ponytail!  4) Sarah looks so serious... but then...

Yea!!!  Got a good smile!!!

Watch the kids grow month-by-month...
